Crossing Guard Employment Opportunity

The City of Palos Hills Police Departments is accepting applications for a Crossing Guard position. The Crossing Guard position is a civilian, non-commissioned position within the Police Department. Under supervision of the Deputy Chief of Police, assists elementary and high school students crossing major intersections by ensuring both students’ and motorists’ adherence to traffic signal directions.

Typical tasks / examples of duties:

  • Maintains presence at station at assigned intersection
  • Maintains order among students waiting to cross intersection
  • Checks that all vehicles at or around intersection have stopped before allowing students to cross intersection
  • Signals motorists when students begin or complete crossing
  • Ensures that student crossings do not interfere with normal flow of traffic
  • Identifies license plates of vehicles in violation of traffic signals and guard’s directions with vehicle has caused substantial threat or actual harm to safety of students and reports incident to police
  • Informally instructs students on good traffic safety habits
  • Speaks at schools and other youth gatherings on traffic safety as required
  • Performs other related duties as required

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Must be at least 19 years old
  • Must have basic knowledge of traffic laws
  • Must be in good physical condition
  • Eyesight must be correctable to 20/20 vision in each eye
  • Must possess excellent visual and physical reflexes
  • Must be able to tolerate outdoor work in every type of weather
  • Must possess physical strength and agility sufficient to tolerate slippery pavement, deep snow, and other adverse weather conditions
  • Must be able to supervise and control large groups of children, and direct motorists and moving traffic

Additional desirable qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a crossing guard

This position is part-time, requiring approximately 5 hours per week. The pay rate is $19.23 per hour
